Fukuzawa Memorial Center (September 2024)
慶應義塾メンタリング・プログラムに参加させていただいており，メンターである慶應義塾福澤研究センター所長 西澤直子さんに福澤研究センターを案内していただきました。 福澤のことばは一人歩きしがちですが、そのことばの背景や歴史に触れて、福澤の信念を知ることができました。 また福澤の面白いエピソードなど交えて説明いただき、福澤の人間性についても感じ取ることができたような気がします。慶應義塾の理念について、福澤に関する西澤さんの著書「福澤諭吉と女性」 「"A Message of Farewell to Nakatsu" by Fukuzawa Yukichi」をベースにお話しをさせていただきました。 特に、「慶應義塾は学者の種紙製造所なり」と大学を蚕卵紙の工場にたとえた上で、「実業の門に入り大に為すことあらんとは、即ち塾の種紙を糸に製するものなり」と、学者の社会での活躍を絹糸の生産として表現したのは印象的でした。これは「活用なき学問は無学に等し」という言葉でもよく知られていますが、自分も学問を世の中に役立てること、また世の中の役に立つ人材を作ることを意識して、教育・研究をしてかなくてはならないと改めて考えさせられました。 本プログラムで学んだことを踏まえ、慶應義塾の将来を担う一教員、研究者として、自身も一身独立し、一身独立した学生を育てていけるように精進していきたいと思います。

I am participating in the Keio Mentoring Program, and my mentor, Naoko Nishizawa, Director of the Keio Fukuzawa Research Center, gave me a tour of the center. Fukuzawa’s words are often taken out of context, but by learning about their historical and ideological background, I was able to gain a deeper understanding of his beliefs. She also shared interesting anecdotes about Fukuzawa, which gave me a sense of his personality as well.
I had the opportunity to discuss Keio University’s philosophy, drawing from Naoko Nishizawa’s book "Fukuzawa Yukichi and Women" and "A Message of Farewell to Nakatsu by Fukuzawa Yukichi." One particularly striking analogy was Fukuzawa’s comparison of Keio University to a factory producing silkworm eggs, stating, “Keio Gijuku is a seed paper factory for scholars.” He further explained that those who enter the world of industry and achieve great things are like those who turn the seed paper into silk threads. This idea is also well known through his words, “Study without application is equal to ignorance.” This discussion reinforced my own commitment to ensuring that academic knowledge serves society and to fostering individuals who can contribute to the world. Building on what I have learned through this program, I am determined to continue striving as an educator and researcher, upholding the spirit of independence and nurturing students who can stand on their own.
